Inca Trail permits
Between 1996 and 2001, in the absence of trail regulations, more than 1000 people were accessing the Inca Trail daily, leading to trail damage and litter along the trail and in the archaeological sites.
In 2003 the Peruvian government established regulations on access to the Inca Trail in order to keep its status of World Heritage Site, under pressure from UNESCO.
One method employed to limit numbers was the prohibition of solo hikers on the trail - you now need to hire a tour operator to hike the Inca Trail.
Since 2003, only 500 people a day are allowed to trek the Inca Trail. This number includes guides and staff, so that now only 200 tourists and 300 porters hike the Inca Trail daily. In addition, since June 2011, 3000 tourists are allowed to access to the Machu Picchu citadel per day. Thus nowadays you need to book well in advance to secure your entrance ticket for Machu Picchu, regardless of whether you go by train or hike the alternative treks.
The Inca Trail is part of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary, a protected area regulated by the SERNANP (Department of Protected Natural Areas of Peru) and "Ministerio de Cultura" (Department of Culture).
All visitors must follow the regulations. Note that the following activities are prohibited: littering, cutting or damaging trees, removing or damaging stones of Inca sites and the trail, removing plants, killing animals, campfire or camping in the Inca sites (only authorized campsites can be used).
Please read the following carefully:
